A heater can add weeks to both ends of the swimming season. The right choice depends on how quickly you want the water warm, how often you swim, and how you feel about running costs.
Heat pumps
Heat pumps move heat from the surrounding air into the water. They are efficient to run in mild weather and well suited to keeping a pool at a steady temperature through the season, but they work harder, and more slowly, as the air gets cold.
Gas heaters
Gas heaters warm water quickly regardless of the air temperature, which makes them a good fit for owners who swim on short notice or want to extend the season into cooler weeks. They generally cost more to run than heat pumps.
Solar
Solar systems use the sun to warm water circulating through collectors. Running costs are low, but heating depends on sunshine and available roof or ground space.
The cover matters
Much of a pool’s heat is lost at the surface. A cover, especially an automatic cover used every day, helps hold heat in, so whichever heater you choose works less.
Tip
Decide on heating early if you are building. Planning equipment and gas or electrical service into the design is simpler than adding it later.
