Designing your backyard for after dark

Pool glowing at dusk beyond landscape-lit ornamental grasses

Some of the best hours in a backyard come after sunset. Thoughtful lighting and fire make the space safe, comfortable, and beautiful at night, and they change how the yard looks from inside the house.

Start with the pool

Underwater LED lighting makes the water glow and can shift color to suit the mood. Lighting steps, benches, and water features adds depth and helps people see edges and entries.

Layer the landscape

  • Path and step lights for safe movement between the house, patio, and water.
  • Uplighting on trees and walls to add depth and frame the view.
  • Soft, warm light around seating areas so faces, not fixtures, are the focus.

Add fire

Fire bowls, fire tables, and fire pits add warmth and a natural gathering point. Combined with water features, they create the signature contrast that makes an evening backyard memorable.

Tip

Plan wiring and gas lines before the patio is poured. Adding them later is far more disruptive.
