The backyards people love most feel like one complete space, not a pool with other things added later. Planning everything together, even if you build in phases, avoids redoing work and makes the whole yard work better.
Start with how you will use it
- How many people do you host, and how often?
- Will you cook outside, and where should the kitchen sit relative to the house?
- Where do you want sun, and where do you want shade?
- What will the yard look like at night from inside the house?
Place the pool first
The pool usually anchors the plan. Its position affects sun exposure, views from the house, privacy, and how people move between the house, the patio, and the water.
Then build the rooms around it
Think of the patio as a series of outdoor rooms: a dining area near the kitchen, a lounge area near the water, and shade from a pergola or covered structure. Paths between them should feel natural.
Light and finish
Landscape and pool lighting extend the evening and make the yard beautiful from inside. Plan wiring early, before the patio is poured, so you can add lighting where it will matter most.
Tip
Even if you build in phases, plan utilities like gas, electrical, and drainage for the whole design from the start.
